Series: Advent 2018

December 23, 2018 The Bread of Life

There are seven “I am” statements in the Gospel of John; statements made that reveal to the world his true identity. They are:

1. I am the bread of life (6:35, 48, 51)

2. I am the light of the world (8:12; 9:5)

3. I am the door of the sheep (10:7, 9)

4. I am the good shepherd (10:11, 14)

5. I am the resurrection and the life (11:25)

6. I am the way, the truth, and the life (14:6)

7. I am the true vine (15:1)

This Sunday, in the last of our Advent sermons exploring the true identity of Jesus, we will look at his declaration, "I am the bread of life."

I hope you will join us on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. What better way to prepare for Christmas than to get better acquainted with the one whose birthday we are celebrating. He is all of the things listed above, and more. He is our destiny and one day we will stand before him with all the hosts of heaven and sing a new song to the One who died for our sins.

I encourage you to come tThis Sunday, his Sunday and on Christmas Eve and worship the Savior who was born for you and for all the world.

Peace in Christ, Pastor Bob

December 16, 2018 The Truth Shall Set you Free

If Advent (the oft forgotten season that precedes Christmas) means anything, it means truth. The truth about Who is coming and Why he's coming.

For thousands of years, the figure of the woeful prophet, standing in the town square proclaiming the end is near, has made people laugh. Why? Because the end isn't really near, is it? We're young and healthy and we'll live forever. Jesus hasn't come yet, perhaps he never will, but if he does it certainly won't be any time soon. In the meantime, let's live for ourselves as if God were only an afterthought.

Jesus spoke about people who live in that manner, who fail to search for truth and instead live a lie. A rich man builds barn after barn to store his stuff but his life is taken suddenly and without warning. Bridesmaids fail to bring along enough fuel for their lamps and miss the arrival of the groom. All the people who take lightly the coming of the Lord and are tragically unprepared when He arrives.

During Advent, the season of hope and expectation of Christ's coming again, we're looking at the Gospel of John's declarations about the infant born in Bethlehem two thousand years ago. He is the eternal Word; the light of the world; the Way to salvation; the Bread of Life. This Sunday we hear Him as the Truth that must be heard - the truth who is coming and who will set us free!

December 9, 2018 The Way Back Home

Will you be "home for the holidays" this year, believing that "there's no place like home"? Then you understand the natural yearning for a place of rest, a place to belong, a place where the depths of love and fellowship are unmatched - a home.

In this Sunday's scripture from the Gospel of John, Jesus comforts his disciples as he prepares for his death and resurrection. He assures them that he will not abandon them, that he is going to prepare a place for them - an eternal home.

"But Lord," Thomas asks, "how will we know the way to this home?" Jesus declares “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Have you accepted this unmerited gift of a way home to God? No other gift will ever be as valuable as the gift of salvation through Jesus. Why not pray to your Heavenly Father right now, a prayer of faith declaring that Jesus alone is your way, your truth, and your life?

Why the World Needs the Word
    Series: Advent 2018

December 2, 2018 Why the World Needs the Word

We begin a new sermon series for Advent this Sunday based on the Gospel of John and its focus on the person of Jesus Christ. Just who was Jesus and why should he matter to me? No other questions are more important to every human being than these. In John we discover that long before he was born in Bethlehem, the Son of God was present at the very creation of the universe. Not only was He present, everything that came into existence did so through Him!

And now, having lost our way through the fall of Adam, Jesus the Savior has come into the world as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the light by which we find our way out of the darkness. He is the Bread of Life by which our very souls are nourished.

I hope you'll come each Sunday in December as we anticipate and celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world!

    Peace in Christ, Pastor Bob
